A Code Is a Clue — Not a Diagnosis
Here's what a lot of shops won't tell you: the code from the scanner is where diagnosis starts, not where it ends. A P0420 code doesn't automatically mean you need a $1,500 catalytic converter — it might be an oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or even bad fuel. Shops that swap parts based on the code alone are gambling with your money.
At Grace Automotive, we treat diagnostics like detective work. We scan the codes, then we test the actual components, check live sensor data, inspect the related systems, and road-test the car to confirm the root cause before recommending a single repair.
Symptoms We Diagnose Every Week
- Check engine light — steady or flashing
- Rough idle or stalling
- Hesitation or loss of power
- Poor fuel economy
- Hard starts or long cranking
- Misfires and shaking
- Strange smells from the exhaust
- Warning lights of any kind
Our Diagnostic Process
- Full system scan — engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, and body modules, not just the engine light
- Live data analysis — we watch sensors in real time to catch intermittent problems that a parked scan misses
- Component testing — electrical tests, pressure tests, smoke tests — whatever the symptom calls for
- Road test — many problems only show up under load, so we drive the car the way you do
- Written findings — photos, plain-English notes, and a clear estimate with options
Important: if your check engine light is flashing, that indicates an active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter quickly. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get to a shop as soon as you safely can.
