Chicago Streets Are Hard on Brakes
Stop-and-go traffic on the Kennedy, sudden stops on Pulaski, winters full of salt and slush — Chicago driving wears brakes faster than almost anywhere. Pads that might last 60,000 miles in the suburbs can be done at 30,000 in city traffic. That's why brake repair is one of the most common jobs we do at Grace Automotive, and why we've gotten very, very good at it over 45 years.
Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
- Squealing or screeching when you brake
- Grinding metal-on-metal noise
- Soft, spongy, or low brake pedal
- Steering wheel shakes when braking
- Car pulls to one side when stopping
- Brake warning light on the dash
- Longer stopping distances than usual
- Burning smell near the wheels
What Our Brake Service Includes
Every brake job at Grace starts with a full inspection — not just the part you came in about. We check the entire braking system so you know exactly where you stand:
- Brake pads & shoes — measured for remaining life, not just eyeballed
- Rotors & drums — checked for warping, scoring, and thickness; resurfaced or replaced as needed
- Calipers & hardware — inspected for sticking, leaks, and uneven wear patterns
- Brake lines & hoses — checked for cracks, swelling, and corrosion (a big deal after Chicago winters)
- Brake fluid — tested for moisture contamination and flushed when it's overdue
- Road test — before and after, so we can verify the fix under real conditions
You get photos of what we found, a plain-English explanation, and a written estimate with Good / Better / Best options before we touch anything. Most brake jobs are finished the same day.
